HELENA,MT-JANUARY 31-Wilmot Collins, the newly elected Mayor of Helena, Montana visits with Bruce Nachtsheim at his Agri Feeds store in Helena. Bruce and his wife Joyce helped the Collin's in their journey from war torn Liberia to the US.
Wilmot Collins, 54, is a former Liberian refugee who recently defeated a four-term incumbent to become Mayor of Helena, Montana, the state's capital city. Collins is Montana's first elected black mayor since statehood. Mayor Collins arrived in the United States in 1994 as a refugee from the brutal Liberian civil war, joining his wife, Maddie, a medical student who arrived ahead of him. Mr. Collins became a United States citizen in 2001. He has served in the US military for 22 years in the Army, Army Reserve, and currently Navy Reserve. Mr. Collins is a child protection specialist with the Montana Department of Child and Family Services and an adjunct professor at the Helena College of the University of Montana.
