Religious pilgrims at, Goumukh, the the 100 m high snout or head of the Gangotri Glacier in northeast Indian in the Himalayan Range, Uttarkashi District. The Gangotri Glacier feeds the Bhagirathi, one of the main tributaries of the Ganges River. The Glacier is 30.2 kms long and between 0.5 and 2.5 kms wide. It has been shrinking at an alarming rate. In the last 25 years it has retreated 850 meters. From 1996 to 1999 it retreated 76 meters.
