The 123,000 acre American Prairie Reserve south of Malta in northern Montana is an intact grass and sage steppe prairie ecosystem. There are 215 buffalo on the reserve with the numbers growing with spring calves. Cattle ranches are important in the region. Over the years the ranches have helped protect the graassland and sage ecosystem.
